The biggest problem with old[er] cars is that they don't compare to modern safety systems like large crumple zones and advanced airbags. There are many examples where even a 1-year gap in make year will greatly increase the safety of passengers: ▶ this video (2015 Nissan Tsuru vs. 2016 Nissan Versa) link (2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee driver-side small overlap IIHS crash test comparison) link (2016 and 2019 Honda HR-V driver-side small overlap comparison) link (the most extreme comparison - 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air vs. 2009 Chevrolet Malibu)
I've posted this atrocity [0] before, but it is on point here. This is an offset crash test between the same segment Nissan sold in the US vs the one sold in Mexico. Draw your own conclusions about "car makers don't compromise on safety". [0] ▶ this video
Sorry to pick on you again, but missed the other fork of your argument that it is not economical to have more regulation than other countries: > If the US regulates itself into having a difficult time making or using working/economical cars, then other countries can more economically create better cars ... The problem is that global companies will build to suit the local regulation or that there will be a race to the bottom. Either leads to atrocities like this: "A car-to-car test between a 2015 Nissan Tsuru, the least expensive sedan sold by Nissan in Mexico, and a 2016 Nissan Versa, the least expensive sedan sold by Nissan in the United States. ▶ this video "
