Highly recommend the YouTube channel 'Technology Connections' videos on heat pumps: link ▶ this video link link
If you want an (entertaining) deep dive into heat pumps, I can recommend Technology Connection's link and its followup, ▶ this video
Technology Connections on Youtube has a great video series on how heat pumps work, why they're important environmentally and what kind of power cost savings they can bring. The second video is a longer guide for people who want to get a heat pump. ▶ this video link
In almost all of the continental USA the number of days that cold are more than offset by the savings during the rest of the days of the year. This YouTube channel covers the topic extensively ▶ this video
They're viable in Maine too. Heat pumps are defying Maine’s winters and oil industry pushback link From an (opinionated) Youtube channel out of the midwest (Chicago area which isn't known for being warm) - Why Heat Pumps are Immensely Important Right Now ▶ this video
Technology Connections has a good video on heat pumps. (Actually several of them, I link the newest one.) ▶ this video
He made several excellent videos explaining residential heat pumps: [2021-02-28] link "Heat Pumps: the Future of Home Heating" (35m14s) [2021-04-01] link "Ground Source / Geothermal Heat Pumps and Other Info" (28m03s) [2022-03-26] ▶ this video "Why Heat Pumps are Immensely Important Right Now" (21m02s) [2022-04-13] link "Heat Pumps are Not Hard: Here's what it will take to start pumping" (46m32s)
Heat pumps have come a long way. ▶ this video gets into the energy efficiency of heat pumps and their temperature tolerances.
Yes, apparently there have been huge advances in the efficiency of heat pumps since then. And this is why ground source heat pumps are less of a thing these days: you don't need the help of that underground temperature as much. This guy gets really excited about heat pumps: ▶ this video link
This is not true since the vast majority of electric whole home heating units sold today are heat pumps, which are up to 300% efficient [1]. If the power generation and distribution is 33% or higher efficiency, then a heat pump will outperform a natural gas furnace operating at 100% efficiency. EDIT - Here's a video that explains it much better than I could, although it's a bit long, this YouTuber is great. [2] [1] link [2] ▶ this video

>Burning something for heat is always more effective, cheaper, and produces fewer emissions compared to an electric heater... >If you’re getting electric heat from coal fired steam that’s always worse than burning the coal locally to heat something, and this is true for all emission-producing power sources. Apparently you can actually save natural gas with electric heat and a heat pump. ▶ this video
