Mike Acton has some pretty common sense views on this: ▶ this video Basically if your making your own game engine then use the context in which you are working. If you are going to end up with something generic like Unity maybe you should just use something like Unity from the start.
Mike Acton said the same thing in an interview. He said curiosity is the best indicator if a candidate will be a good hire. Casey Muratori was interviewing him at HandmadeHero Con back in 2016. Here is the snippet: ▶ this video
You could spend 2 minutes looking up who you are talking about. This video from 2015 where Casey is interviewing Mike Acton: ▶ this video Also this course where he specifically talks about Numpy and pure Python: link
As Mike Acton (Data Oriented Design Guru) once said in an interview "I don't care what you learned in school.. I care about what you learned of your own volition" [paraphrased from 1]. It never hurts to learn new things. Another HN poster suggested this channel for beefing up on linear algebra, and I absolutely love it [2]. [1] ▶ this video [2] link
