Modern SQL: A lot has changed since SQL-92 by Markus Winand

talk · intermediate · evergreen · 2019–2023 on HN
Markus Winand shows how SQL has evolved since SQL-92, comparing old-style solutions to modern features such as window functions and system versioning, and notes that many developers never learn them.
Recommended as the best introduction to modern SQL standard features that textbooks skip.

I happened to fall down this rabbit hole a few days ago because of another HN thread. In it, a commenter mentioned [1] a talk by Markus Winand where he goes over some of the more interesting additions to the SQL standard since 92, including versioned tables [2] (I've linked to the timestamp, but the whole talk is good). I got real excited about that feature because I could think of a few tables at work that could use it. Sadly, PostgreSQL doesn't implement it [3] (I can't permalink to the feature but you can search for "T180", "System-versioned tables", "T181", or "Application-time period tables"). I recommend you look at one of Markus Winand's presentations, such as this one : ▶ this video I felt it summarized well the modern foundation of SQL databases.
That feature's "coming" - part of SQL 2011 called System Versioning, currently supported in DB2 and SQL Server, but available in MariaDB 10.3 Beta according to this talk: ▶ this video
