OLED screen don't seem to be happening for Computer monitors. Probably burn in issues. Dell introduced and quickly discontinued one model. Plus e-ink has no backlight whatsoever, yes OLED on a terminal screen can probably come close but i'm not so sure it is the same. e-ink is just in a class of its own. Was hoping Qualcomm Mirasol went somewhere or maybe Pixel Qi but alas nope. Still holding out hope for ClearInk. It might be the display that kills e-ink and becomes the magical display that everyone gets. [1]: link [2]: link [3]: ▶ this video
I had never heard of Clearink before but, damn, their tech does look quite impressive[0]! I would LOVE to see a ReMarkable with such a screen! At @4:08 the company representative says > Our current schedule is to bring gen-1 productions to the market in 2020 Well, I guess I'll be crossing my fingers that it'll happen as soon as this pandemic over. The technology page makes me thing the viewing angle is going to be more narrow than e-ink; the shape of the surface and the difference in index of refraction when on and off is going to determine how well they can do on that metric, but the complete lack of any mention of viewing angle makes me think it's not great. [edit] ▶ this video It's B&W and much lower contrast than current gen e-paper, but viewing angle looks great (maybe 120 degrees confirmed from the video?). They definitely need a matte surface though; that glare was terrible.
Let's hope clearink[1] and other competitors get funding and push their tech forward. Clearink seems to be targeting educational emerging markets fisrt though[2]. [1] link [2] ▶ this video
My (meanwhile modest) hopes are with clearink [1]. Let's hope they don't go full mirasol. 1: ▶ this video
The most interesting new-old startup in this space the past couple years is clearInk: ▶ this video ..but they haven't shipped anything yet AFAIK. And no idea how electronics/etc is hidden around their demo frames.
They've shown excellent pre-production models, and have $300m in ‘confirmed commitments’. I'm not going to bet they'll be on time, but it seems wrong to dismiss them as just talk. ▶ this video
