comedy · general · evergreen · 2020–2024 on HN
A one-minute clip from South Park in which BP issues a hilariously insincere corporate apology over its oil spill.
Used as a joke reference whenever a company issues a hollow public apology.

LOL To these guys, “taking responsibility” means simply making a sad face and issuing a press release saying “we’re sorry.”[1]. Not actually taking responsibility and going to prison. 1: ▶ this video
> "We've done a lot of bad things, and we'll try to improve in the future." Standard procedure. And they will change nothing in the future. ▶ this video
> "We did have bugs and errors in the system and we did help the Post Office in their prosecutions of the sub-postmasters. For that we are truly sorry." Every time some CEO issues an apology i can't help but not take it seriously because it reminds of following scene: ▶ this video
Maybe if he says “I’m sorry” South Park-style [1], they’ll reunite? In all seriousness though, there’s really no coming back from this. He made a risky move and he should stand behind it. OpenAI’s trajectory is pretty much screwed. Maybe they won’t disappear, but their days of dominating the market are obviously numbered. And of course, well done, Satya, for turning a train wreck into a win for Microsoft. (And doing so before market open!) [1]: ▶ this video
But don't worry they're a changed company in the valley now and they're so sorry for past behaviour (nothing to do with being caught)... ▶ this video
Reminds me of the "We're sorry" BP corporate apology scene from South Park that aged like fine wine. Edit: found it ▶ this video
Maritime law has been super weak historically. There are basically no repercussions at all unless people get hurt. Even if the company itself gets fined, they'll simply declare bankruptcy, close up shop and sell their assets to a new company (often incidentally run by the same people). Sad how relevant this still is: ▶ this video
