comedy · general · evergreen · 2018–2021 on HN
A one-minute ProZD comedy sketch about how a person's enthusiasm for a hobby changes after they discover its subreddit. It satirizes how communities turn casual interest into gatekeeping and gear obsession.
Used as a joke when HN threads show enthusiasts arguing over niche details.

> I think peoples tastes have shifted to quality in more areas, because they can quickly google and see what the best looks like. I've noticed that I do a lot more min/maxing. I'm always optimizing my purchases for the best available at the lowest cost. Which means hundreds of hours of research. Research which often makes no real difference in the end. I'm reminded of this video: ▶ this video If you're into the mechanical keyboard community or subreddit you know the meme of an "end game" keyboard. This borders on mental illness at times. Preparing to do the thing you want to do rather than actually doing the thing.
The responses from the keyboard enthusiasts here are a real life example of this phenomenon: ▶ this video The guy just likes this cheap keyboard. I use those aluminum Mac keyboards for most of the same reasons: I like (somewhat) low key travel, they’re cheap and easy to find, and last reasonably well. Edit: Actually it looks like the $50 keyboard I’m talking about got replaced by the “Magic” keyboard that’s considerably more expensive. Too bad.
This is the first thing it reminded me of: ProZD's product review of drinking water. It's quite funny. ▶ this video
