news · general · 2017–2020 on HN
A short clip of Senate testimony in which Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is asked whether the NSA collects data on Americans and answers in the negative. The uploader presents it as a flat-out lie, later contradicted by the Snowden disclosure…
HN commenters cite it as the canonical example of an intelligence official lying to Congress under oath without consequence.

> But evvvveryone spies on everyone The NSA has a budget bigger than entire countries economic output. Not everyone spies on everyone to the same extent. Not everyone breaks their own laws constantly to the same extent. Not everyone hides behind some bullshit moral argument to justify their actions to same extent. The rot is real. They now have more power than any elected official including the President and repeatedly lie under sworn oath. These people are no longer public servants they are public masters. ▶ this video
Few questions after reading this: Did NSA really stop the warrantless searches? They hinted in April they would. What is NSA going to do with their Utah data center? Tax payers paid for it right? link James Clapper blatantly lied to Congress, is anything ever going to happen to him? ▶ this video
Wyden: "Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?" Clapper: "No, sir. Wyden: "It does /not/?" Clapper: "Not wittingly. There are cases where they could inadvertently perhaps but not wittingly." ▶ this video
