Yep. It's exactly 2323 seconds in to the WWDC 2023 keynote. The quote is "we truly live in an age of wonders." ▶ this video I carried an Android daily for this use case, since I use multiple timers throughout the day. I appreciate that they acknowledged, even if in a tounge-in-cheek way, that this should have happened sooner.
For reference, this is the original context: The title-linked reddit thread, in turn links to the following YT video, which is of the WWDC23 Apple Keynote speech of June 5. See below the link for a text transcript of that relevant excerpt. ▶ this video "Finally, the 32-core Neural Engine is 40% faster [than M1 Ultra]. And M2 Ultra can support an enormous 192GB of unified memory, which is 50% more than M1 Ultra - enabling it to do thing other chips just can't do. For example, in a single system, it can train massive ML workloads, like large transformer models, that the most powerful discrete GPU can't even process, because it runs out of memory."
This is why I think it's so strange that Apple shows mounting an iPhone to a bike handlebar as an official use case in their latest watch presentation, where you can use the phone as a second display to show workout metrics from your watch. On one hand they tell you not to do it because it can break your phone, on the other hand they build features that assume you will do it anyway. ▶ this video
It is like a deal killer for me that in meetings that you get swapped for a creepy uncanny valley version of yourself. The hardware seemed amazing, but the software was disappointing. ▶ this video
It sure can be used as a display for a Mac. Just stand in front of a Mac, and the screen will go dark and the windows will be moved to your Vision Pro. Here's the point in the Keynote showing it: ▶ this video
I don't understand why there is no AR or VR killer app for this thing. Their sales pitch was "it makes it amazing to read articles in safari"? ▶ this video $3500 to... look at a floating web browser? Surely they can come up with something. Give me UV/IR vision, let me see the pipes under the ground, show me how to assemble the furniture I'm looking at, give me a template to paint by numbers of a real canvas -- why is this basic concept of "a $3500 novelty device should enable me to do something _new_" so hard for a 3 trillion dollar company to grasp? Are they just hoping someone comes up with all the above in the next 6 months? If they did, would anyone care? $3500 is relatively a lot of money if you're already giving them iPhone and Macbook money. The supermajority of the world doesn't make more then 60k a year, pre-tax. Actually, the supermajority makes vastly less than that. I guess I'll wait and watch and see if they prove me wrong, but I suspect no matter how good it is, it'll flop.
Looking forward to trying this. Could be great! But: - Why are no of the other people in the meeting using a Vision? :P ▶ this video - The see-through of your eyes from the outside looks super creepy.
> did they talk about using it as a display for a Mac? Yes, in the keynote at 1:32:02. It discusses how looking at your computer then turns the Vision Pro into a display. ▶ this video
That explains why WWDC was popping up while searching for 'Apollo'! Reference: link (Video with timestamp: ▶ this video ) (In other news, TIL Youtube search seemingly looks through transcripts. Nice!)
