Dominion is a two-hour documentary using drones and hidden cameras to expose conditions in animal agriculture, including food, clothing, entertainment and research. It questions humanity's dominion over animals.
HN commenters push it, often forcefully, as the video to watch to see what factory farming really involves, and some say it changed their diet.

That's not the full definition of murder. Here's the rest: - 1: to kill (a human being) unlawfully and with premeditated malice - 2: to slaughter wantonly : SLAY - 3a: to put an end to - 3b: TEASE, TORMENT - 3c: MUTILATE, MANGLE ▶ this video Watch Dominion and tell us these animals are not being mutilated, mangled, tormented, slaughtered and murdered. Animals do not want to die. The will ALL naturally cry, scream, run, fight and generally do anything possible to avoid getting killed. Killing them is murder. Discrimination or unjustified treatment of animals based on an individual's species membership is called Speciesism. The belief that humans alone possess intrinsic value or are the central entity in the universe is called Anthropocentrism.
Not waking up earlier to the fact that the meat section in the supermarket is a product of systemic, gruesome torture of intelligent beings. Like probably many of you who read this, I usually felt a bit guilty when I was confronted with the ugly facts we are all vaguely familiar with. I justified my meat consumption with specieist arguments (humans are so much better than pigs, cows, etc). My wife challenged me to watch at least a little bit of a documentary, and if I still wanted to eat salami, so be it. Afterwards I didn't want to eat salami anymore. I now think that the extreme abuse of animals by the food industry on behalf of ignorant consumers is probably the worst evil of the 21st century. If you disagree, I challenge you - watch 15min and then post your reply: ▶ this video
Dominion: ▶ this video It’s about the cruelty that happens in the animal industry. Minks, dogs, gooses, cows, pigs, horses, camels and a lot more. Watching that has changed my life quite a bit.
Farming is a way for folks who work with their hands to achieve some degree of self-sovereignty and freedom — laudable goals. Unfortunately, this is often accomplished through gross ethical violations. All we can do is educate consumers about the benefits of a whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet. I challenge anyone to watch both The Dominion [1] and Forks Over Knives [2], and not walk away from the experience at least semi-curious about WFPB. [1]: ▶ this video [2]: link
Because it involves causing extreme suffering, and we definitively do not need to do it to live long healthy lives. Literally just watch Dominion. Watch it to see the suffering I’m talking about. Why do you think animals deserve this so that you can eat a meal? Is that agony they exist in for their whole life worth a hamburger, or a piece of cheese? Vegans say no. ▶ this video
> If you can determine the sex of a hatching egg you can entirely dispense with the culling of live male chicks Here is the video, timestamped (24m30s) to the "culling" of male chicks. Trigger Warnings: NSFL, Gore. ▶ this video On a purely personal note, this documentary made me re-evaluate my diet. I'm still not strong enough to be off meat even though that is what I want, but I have successfully abstained from chicken, pig and cow for the past 2 years.
By which definition of "relevant" are animal cruelty[0] and pandemic-level diseases not included? COVID-19 is very "tame" compared to what's possible. There's a sense in which we're lucky that we got this pandemic as a practice round for something which we know has the potential to be much, much worse. This isn't controversial at all. [0] If you think it's not that bad, watch Dominion: ▶ this video
This is probably me not being able to “read the room” but this study both makes me very happy and very sad. I recently watched Dominion documentary [1] and the more we learn about animals cognition the more I feel the weight of their massive abuse especially in the last 150 years. (The recent story of an HNer interacting with a spider on his desk was really cool though, I don’t have a link anymore.) Without judging anyone or their behavior in particular I just feel repelled by our treatment of other clearly cognitive beings. The people working these places don’t seem like ones you would want around anyone in society either and I don’t buy the story that it’s only bad in some places. I’d wager that it’s really bad in most cases. [1] ▶ this video

Oh boy, let me tell you, animals absolutely know what we are doing to them. They suffer immensely. Check this out, it offers just a glimpse into what that suffering includes: ▶ this video
Human evolution is poorly understood, and the assumption that any choice $X supposedly made by early humans led to our forefathers’ anamolously rapid brain development is flatly speculative. > Unlike most great apes today, whose diet is primarily plant based, we can thank the incredible nutrient density in meat and our incredible hunting and tool creating ability for prefrontal cortex development. Complete and utter speculation. > We were pack hunters, forging tools and strategies capable of taking down mammoths. Call it 'diabolicaly evil' if you want, but this is simply nature and survival. Subsistence hunting amongst early human tribes is not comparable to modern day factory farming in any conceivable way. B12 doesn’t come from eating plants OR animals: it comes from bacteria, and ironically that bacteria is in such short supply on factory farms that the animals need to be injected with synthetic B12. > I don't personally believe highly processed plant alternatives such as Beyond meat are a long term option if you're even vaguely interested in your own health. I eat raw soybeans, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. I’d recommend watching the documentary Forks Over Knives [1] if you care about your personal health, and the documentary Dominion [2], if you’d like to see what really happens on factory farms. How happy are these animals in the documentary, Dominion? ▶ this video Your post presents a nice rainbows and sunshine guess at how the animal ag industry works, and I really wish it worked like that, too.
