> the next US President One nice thing about US Americans: they're always so optimistic! One day Rabinovich is browsing the local news site, as is his habit, and he clicks it away but somehow a chatbot still pops up on his screen: — Moishe, we notice that you only come to our site once a day, and not only do you not doomscroll, you don't even scroll past the fold. :-( Is there anything we could do to improve your engagement? — No, no, I only come to check the obituaries. — But the obituaries are in their own section, linked from the footer. You never even see the footer! — Believe you me, this obituary will be above the fold. > what would be the point? a Danish poem from 1940: Losing one glove is certainly painful, but nothing compared to the pain, of losing one, throwing away the other, and finding the first one again. > in the Western Hemisphere. (a) we've heard "spheres of influence" before, and seen Fall Blau happen anyway. ▶ this video (b) Distances: 1'400 km Nuuk <-> Reykjavik* 3'300 km Nuuk <-> Washington DC Just saying, dude. * I saw a map in a major US paper last night that somehow was missing Iceland completely. Do you all even have fact checkers anymore?
I have seen worse, where people updated the EULA 6 months after being paid $14k/seat. Now it is FOSS all the way... lesson learned... =3 ▶ this video
NI rarely made established software better after a company acquisition. Generally, IT and Engineering agreed to deprecate their product lines off critical systems about 2 minutes after the deal went through. =3 ▶ this video
In general, young naive entrepreneurs are easier to exploit due to desperation in a sucker VC deal, and tax or school credits often subsidize youth labor costs in many places. No tech bro or VC wants experienced people around telling younger versions of themselves what to avoid. =3 ▶ this video
Brexit really is like the Robot Chicken skit with Darth Vader (“I have altered the deal, pray I do not alter it further” [1] every piece of news I hear about it involves things inevitably getting worse for the UK. The very personification of Lando’s “this deal is getting worse all the time”. 1: ▶ this video
> Google always had internal review processes. If your argument is not that the new review process is unreasonable, just that people were hired under the expectation that there would be none, then I get where you're coming from but it doesn't sound very likely to me. Here is my steelman position: I think the objection is that the old internal review was reasonable, and while the argument can be made that the new one does not seem un reasonable to many people under the principle of "don't bite the hand that feeds you", it's reasonableness in a faux-academic setting is at least debatable, and in any case it is inarguable that the new one is more restrictive than the one that was in place when these researchers were hired. So, at the very least, this seems like a unilateral bait-and-switch on Google's part. The company is now reneging on the representations made to prospective employees regarding their academic freedom. "I have altered the deal; pray I do not alter it any further.": ▶ this video
