commentary · general · 2010–2013 on HN
A parody video contrasting Nokia's polished N97 promotional material with the sluggish, buggy reality of using the phone.
Cited as an infamous example of the gap between marketing renders and shipped products.

I don't think we're actually disagreeing. I'm not saying that the average iPhone user has remarked "Core Graphics is great! It makes my phone so responsive and fast!". I'd be very surprised if any lay iOS user has ever said that ;) But the idea is the level of interactivity and the UX around iPhone would have been impossible without the platform Apple first built for OSX. Many other manufacturers at the time had UX ambitions like Apple, but were held back by their own platforms. This infamous video comparing the concept renders of the Nokia N97 vs. what shipped really demonstrates this: ▶ this video It's not that Apple didn't innovate on the UX, they sure as hell did, but rather that they bought themselves a huge lead on the competition by having, for all practical purposes, the only platform around that could even do something like that.
Yeah..... never trust Nokia after ▶ this video ] They don't grasp how much they hurt themselves with crap like that. If your product isn't good enough to be used in the commercial, then don't sell it.
Nokia produces another slick computer-animated video showing how fast, responsive, and stable their phones are. Doesn't anyone remember this: ▶ this video
At the same time, kudos for showing actual product performance. Thanks to their advertising, I feel like I can make an accurate judgment of the device's performance. Contrast the Slate's ad to the overly-aggressive critique of Nokia's advertising for the N97 at ▶ this video
I haven't seen a Nokia phone that has the kind of intuitive, well-organized, attractive, and responsive UI that we see with the iPhone and Android phones. I have some friends who have expensive Nokia phones and like to brag about their capabilities, but when you actually see these phones in use, they just aren't as enjoyable to use due to the OS which seems unrefined (I'd go so far as to say it seems unfinished). ▶ this video is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. If you were to make a list with checkboxes, it would seem that the N97 is as good as an iPhone. But if you actually use it... I don't think it's a U.S. vs Europe thing; it's just that Nokia had a headstart in Europe. I would bet that they're losing market share here in Europe as well. At least in France, it seems that everyone has an iPhone these days. That having been said, I do think Nokia makes excellent hardware, particularly the actual phone functionality (voice quality, not dropping calls, etc). If they could just bring their OS up to par, they would see some attention and success in the US.
Oh my. Will this end up like NOKIA's failure to deliver on the interface promise? See comparison between the animatic and real life: ▶ this video I've got serious issues with the disconnect between advertised and delivered user interfaces, especially when it comes to flow.
