talk · intermediate · 2009–2019 on HN
A 2007 Google Tech Talk introducing Polyworld, an artificial life simulator used to evolve artificial intelligence by designing worlds rather than minds. It presents results from ongoing attempts to evolve intelligent behavior.
Referenced as an interesting early example of developing AI through evolution and artificial life simulation.

This is incredible. The various emergent behaviors are fascinating. I remember being amazed a decade ago by the primitive graphics in artificial life simulators like Polyworld: link ▶ this video It seems that OpenAI has a great little game simulated for their agents to play in. The next step to make this even cooler would be to use physical, robotic agents learning to overcome challenges in real meatspace!
As much as I understood, this project isn't so much about AI, as it is about a better understanding of biology. I don't know if the project still lives, or are there other many such works, but Polyworld seemed like an interesting idea (developing AI through evolution): ▶ this video
