The nuance of this news is that it is a for a standard consumer mobile device. It is not intended to replace coverage in areas where telcos exist, rather to supplement in times of spotty coverage or emergencies. >@Elon: This service works in partnership with wireless providers, like what @SpaceX and @TMobile announced. In your scenario you would likely be sending text/sms based communication as a primary priority (ie. coordinates, instructions) with MMS as a secondary luxury. If you are permanently or frequently in an area without telco service you would want to make use of specialized hardware which is optimized for starlink communication. For example, here is video of Elon using starlink for video conferencing which demonstrates not only high upload speeds, but also quick swapping between satellites without disconnect. ▶ this video
This whole article should be pulled. It's (possibly intentionally) just inventing lies on key issues. "However, he admitted that he turned off internet access from his Starlink satellites during a Ukrainian raid last year on a Russian naval fleet." This is horseshit. The geoblocks those the boats just careened in to were in place for a long time before, and limited to not allow access in Russia due to US sanctions! What Elon was asked to do, was to break the regulations his company is working beneath to create a major new offensive, against the then-current mindset of how US supplied Ukraine in long-term capabilities. Elon said explicitly that if it actually came through the proper channels, and not some random Ukrainian source, he would absolutely have made an exception and opened up those then-closed areas. ▶ this video
> Your Terms of Service do not superscede your host country's foreign policy goals. I must have missed the part where the United States government requested Starlink be activated in Crimea. Elon has explicitly stated if the request came from the US government he would have complied. It did not. It came from the Ukrainian government, which is not his host country. The US government knows how to contact Elon and could have done so if they wanted him to do it. ▶ this video If Ukraine had asked SpaceX for a Falcon 9 they wanted to crash into the Kremlin should they have given it to them?
