explainer · general · evergreen · 2015–2021 on HN
A Kurzgesagt animation of how the immune system responds to a bacterial infection, depicting immune cells as an army defending the body.
HN suggests it as a simple, layman-friendly explanation of the immune system, especially during COVID vaccine discussions.

this video is good simple(ish) explaination - note it says bacteria, but the vid is for most things that are invasive ▶ this video It's from the Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell channel
▶ this video Here's a nice video on the immune system that might help you out. Their other videos on the immune system, the complement system, and viruses might also be helpful. Not the most technical deep dives, but good, abstracted explanations. In short, I don't think the vaccine prevents entry of the virus into the cells. That still happens, as it's a mechanical protein interaction (as far as I know). However, the vaccine (mRNA ones at least) work by producing the protein on the outside of the virus and putting that in your system, so your immune system learns how to respond. At least that's my mile-high interpretation.
You won't become a physicist from watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos , but I found it immensely educational. It's worth knowing what science knows about what the universe is and our place in it. Of course you aren't going to become an expert in astronomy, but you don't need to be. Many, certainly not all, but many of these videos are educational in the same sense. They give a layman a basic grasp of a complex subject. E.g. this video on the immune system won't make you a biologist, but it's still pretty informative: ▶ this video These are the kinds of videos that teachers might show in a classroom. Certainly they are way better made than the cheesy, poorly made educational videos I saw in school. And to be fair, all of this stuff is entertainment, even Cosmos. There's no practical value to me to learn about how stars are made, or how the immune system works. But I find these things interesting.
The immune system is reactive and takes both energy and nutrients. Antibiotics reduce this expenditure which adds up over time. Consider how many of these steps involve cell growth and or tissue damage that needs to be repaired: ▶ this video TLDR; Low dose antibiotics don't eliminate infections, but by reducing their growth the immune system puts far less effort into defense.
